Creating New Opportunities
Creating new opportunities involves taking the initiative to find something new. Opportunity seekers are innovative and determined go-getters who are always searching for something new to challenge and excite them.
My Experience:
My educational plan and goal is to enroll in the Professional Program of Accounting and prepare for a career in the public accounting industry. I was told by my older peers and advisors that I do not need to do anything the summer before my senior year, especially since I am already ahead in my classes and participated on a study abroad trip the previous summer. However, the idea of doing absolutely nothing over the summer was haunting me. I decided to attend the business career fair and talk to companies about any accounting related internships that were not in the public accounting industry. I met with Dell and discovered they have an excellent accounting development program and supplemental internship program. Although I was not required to have an internship, I wanted to try something new. I took the time and initiative to meet with recruiters, learn about the company, and interview with directors. I advanced to the second round for callbacks and recently received an offer to intern this summer as an undergrad accounting associate.
What I Learned:
This experience taught me to not always listen to other’s opinions about what I should or should not do. You will not understand the vast opportunities available and will limit yourself to confided outcomes if you do not seek new opportunities. I am a strong believer that happiness comes from within oneself. If you are unhappy with your current relationship, job, or whatever situation it may be, only you have the power to change it. Therefore by always seeking new opportunities and changing your normal routine, you can potentially discover your passions and find something that makes you genuinely happy. I feel I will use this throughout my life, as I always think about “what’s next,” and seeking new opportunities will allow me to find my next step in life.
